The district capital Agios Nikolaos, with a population of about 10,000, is located in the east of Crete and has become a popular place for visitors. The 70 km from Heraklion take just under an hour to drive.
Agios Nikolaos is – along with Chania – considered by many fans of Crete to be the most beautiful city on this Greek island. In the centre of the city is Lake Voulismeni, which is connected to the sea by a canal. It reaches a depth of up to 64 m in the middle and is associated with many Greek myths. It is surrounded on two sides by numerous taverns and cafés, from where you can watch the colourful fishing boats. On the other two sides, a rocky coast rises steeply up, with a small park at the top, where paved hiking trails invite you to take a walk and take pictures.
